Week 7: Sequencing Puzzle

The first puzzle that teaches the trach change process will look at the sequencing of the steps in the procedure. I was inspired by the game Pilgrims to use playing card images to visualize each step. Pilgrims is an adventure game. Along the process of the game, you collect characters and objects that go into a deck of cards. When you reach a new situation, you choose which character takes action by choosing their card. The object cards act as your inventory.

The card objects helped me visualize the process. Next, I needed to determine how the players would interact with them. They could certainly just put them in order and submit for confirmation. I decided to research other sequencing puzzle games. I found many that were aimed at children and taught sequencing skills. These were mostly drag and drop quizzes. Another game gave a sequence of numbers in a grid for a few seconds and then asked the player to touch the spaces in sequence. This game focused on memory, sort of like the game Simon. Then I found a game called Sequence - the game (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/sequence-the-game/id1447697983) where you discover the order of 3 colored dots based on hints. It’s similar to Wordle except since you are dealing with colored dots, there is no way to predict the pattern except for the hints. The hints tell you how many dots are the right color and how many are in the right location. I think I can use this idea with my game. I have 13 steps right now. The player will have to put them in order. I haven’t decided if I will break them into groups or treat all thirteen as one group. Hints will tell the player how many are in the right position. Since the cards can be put in order based on reasoning, the game is less challenging than the dots. I will introduce challenge in the number of attempts to win full credit, partial credit, or no credit. The hints will only be available after submitting the guessed sequence. One thing I like about this is that the game adapts to different levels. If a player has previously mastered this information, they will succeed in one or two tries and get accolades and the opportunity to move on in the game. If a player hasn’t mastered this information, then they get practice and feedback before moving on.
